Learning Music

Let's face it - for most people, learning music is not easy.

And unlike many of my fellow professional musicians, this has been my experience too. Whilst I was lucky enough to have some formal classical and jazz training on cello, clarinet and sax as a child, most of my knowledge, particularly on double bass has been self taught.

Growing up in a family of outstanding musicians, and having what I now know is ADHD related learning disabilities meant that I squandered my successful early musical successes and the musical liftoff that my siblings enjoyed.

I have often struggled to understand how music works - why it works - and how to make it work for me. The urge to quit was an ever constant threat.
I had a classic case of 'imposter syndrome'.

Music almost left me in my formative years, and was it not for meeting the amazing NZ pianist, Murray McNab in my early 20s, I would have surely quit. Murray took me under his wing as my mentor and taught me what he knew. These days of exploration have been fundamental to my success as a musician.

This is why having a good teacher/mentor is so important. I wish for nothing more than to reduce your learning troubles, and help you achieve your musical goals.

I would love nothing more than to share my hard-fought knowledge, and make your learning experience as fun and exciting as I know it can be with the right support and patient guidance.

Finding a teacher that clicks with you is important, and that is why I offer an initial session free of charge - in person, or virtually.

It doesn't have to be so hard....
